FM-2030, for Violin, Cello & Involuntary Quartet

“FM-2030”, so-named for the transhumanist philosopher Fereidoun M. Esfandiary, utilizes programmed electric muscle stimulation (EMS) to generate involuntary movements in a quartet. The EMS controlled players in the quartet are accompanied by a violinist and cellist playing from a written score.

A collaboration with drummer, multi-instrumentalist and music producer Jim Sclavunos, FM-2030 premiered in 2013 at Sonica Festival in Glasgow.
